這部電影的對白很慢,所以葳寶才可以一邊聽影片,一邊將對白用中英對照的方式記錄下來;一方面訓練英聽,加強英文能力,又從中擷取名言佳句,分享給喜歡看影片的朋友們。
電影的主角是Eugene Brown及Tahime Sander,他們都是黑人。美國人雖然尊重種族平等,但也不難看出黑人的內心因膚色人種的階級多少受到影響。
Eugene Brown是個剛從監獄出來的更生人,他曾經當大哥帶過一幫混混、偷竊﹑搶銀行等無惡不作。因搶銀行而入監服刑17年, 最美好的青壯年就在獄中度過了,也因而疏忽了對兒女的關愛。(Brown先生的兒子Marco也是個問題少年,曾經出入青少年拘留中心)
我們看到了一個有前科的罪犯重啟人生的歷程，假釋委員會似乎也沒有能在安排更生人的工作上使得上什麼力量。而在尋找可糊口的一份工作的歷程中,難免會受到幫派的誘惑……….。葳寶在想, 好手好腳的或家庭完整的人更要知道奮發圖強,一個人地位高低其實並不是來自你的財富﹑位階﹑身分,而是來自你的態度與自信心!像Brown先生一樣,在象棋生涯中找回了信心與尊敬!
Brown透過之前兄弟的幫忙, 說了幾句好話,終於在Maud Alton學校謀了一份差事-清潔工。
Maud Alton學校的學生大部分是問題學生,如: 貧窮﹑來自單親家庭甚至沒有出身證明的孩子。(事實證明孩子們既使沒有好的出生,還是能擁有重生的機會啊!)
Brown先生因為國際象棋遊戲而與學校裡一群桀傲不遜的孩子們開始擦出了火花。
這裡講的象棋是國際西洋棋, 很有意思的棋子。(看來葳寶要找個時間透過劇中 Brown 的名言『Think before you move』來學學這套西洋棋了)
劇情裡Tahime Sanders的單親媽終於到場看Tahime與J. Thomas Gaines一搏, 身為人母的葳寶也忍不住酸起了眼……。
後來Brown 先生受到了一雙兒女的諒解(聽到Trini開口叫爸爸就知道了,開心
),而且在片尾可以看到Brown先生的全家福呢!
這是一部真人改編的故事,「大椅子象棋俱樂部」已經成立了,並與美國在地七所學校及一青少年拘留所合作, 有五所學校因其而命名並贏得了四項國際冠軍, 華盛頓區的市長並將6月15日訂為”大椅子象棋俱樂部日”。
目前Brown與他的妻子居住在北加州,他已經成立了第二家分部﹐而且打算在美國內部城市全面推廣象棋課程呢。
